What Is the Annual Cost of Owning an Electric Bike in the UK?

Annual cost of owning an electric bike in the UK, E-Movement replacement e-bike battery

A full charge for an e-bike costs about 13p in the UK so electricity is the smallest bill you'll face. The bigger costs come from servicing, worn parts and, one day a new battery which typically lasts 500 to 1,000 charge cycles. Here's what each one involves plus the quick fixes you can try yourself first.

What does it cost to own an electric bike each year?

Your yearly cost comes down to four things: electricity, servicing, wear parts and the battery. Electricity is the only one with a national rate we can work out exactly. For the rest, we've shown real E-Movement prices wherever we have them.

Cost What to expect
Electricity About 13p per full charge on a 500Wh battery, or roughly £20 a year at three full charges a week
Servicing The price depends on your bike and the work needed contact us for a quote
Wear parts Inner tubes from £9.99 and tyres from £39.99 at E-Movement
Battery £299.99 to £449.99 for an E-Movement replacement, typically lasting 500 to 1,000 charge cycles
Insurance Not a legal requirement for a road-legal e-bike in UK

How much does it cost to charge an e-bike in the UK?

A 500Wh battery costs about 13p to charge from empty. Ofgem's price cap puts the average electricity rate at 26.32p per kWh from 1 October to 31 December 2026 and a 500Wh battery holds 0.5kWh. Half of 26.32p comes to just over 13p. For example, if you charge your e-bike three times a week, you'll spend around £20 a year.

Want to Calculate Your E-Bike's Charging Cost?

If your bike has a different battery size, you can find your exact cost with a quick two-step formula:

1. Divide your battery's Wh by 1,000 to get its size in kWh.

2. Multiply that number by the electricity rate on your energy bill.

Two Things to Keep in Mind

  • Your tariff matters: The 13p figure is based on the average standard variable tariff paid by Direct Debit. If you are on a fixed deal or a time-of-use tariff (like economy 7), your costs will be different.
  • Rates change: Ofgem reviews and updates the energy price cap every three months, so it is always worth double-checking your bill now and then. You'll find the latest figures on the Ofgem website.

How much does an e-bike service cost?

The price of an e-bike service depends on your bike and what it needs so the fairest answer is a quote for your own bike. Regular electric bike maintenance keeps your brakes, gears, tyres and electrical connections in good shape. It also helps you catch small problems before they turn into expensive ones.

How long does an e-bike battery last?

Most e-bike batteries last 500 to 1,000 charge cycles which usually means around three to five years. A cycle is one full charge and discharge so two half charges count as one. Where you land in that range depends a lot on how you ride and charge.

The battery is usually the biggest single cost over the life of your bike so it's worth looking after. Use the charger that came with your bike and never open the battery casing. A removable battery makes life easier too because you can bring it indoors to charge. For safety advice read the GOV.UK guidance on e-cycle battery safety.

How much does an E-Movement replacement battery cost?

An E-Movement replacement battery costs between £299.99 and £449.99, depending on your model. Spread over a typical lifespan of three to five years, that's roughly £60 to £150 a year.

Do you need to insure an e-bike?

No. Insurance isn't a legal requirement for an e-bike that follows the UK rules. A legal electrically assisted pedal cycle has a motor of up to 250W and the assistance cuts out at 15.5mph. You can read the full rules on GOV.UK.

Cover is your choice. If you're thinking about it, check whether your home contents policy already covers the bike and whether the battery is included. Policies differ so read the details before you commit.

Which e-bike problems can you fix yourself?

Plenty of small faults take just a few minutes and don't need a workshop. These checks are safe for most riders to try at home:

  • Low tyre pressure: Check this often. Tyre pressure is stated on the side of your tyre.
  • Dry or noisy chain: Clean it up and grease it. Do not put the lubrication near brake rotors or pads.
  • Worn brake pads: Inspect your brake pads and change them if necessary.
  • E-bike not charging: Use a different socket, test the charging light, and ensure your battery is properly connected.
  • Display won't switch on: Turn the e-bike off, disconnect the battery, reconnect and turn it on again.
  • Loose components: Inspect your mud guards and accessories.

For advice on your specific model, see the E-Movement e-bike care and maintenance guidelines.

When should you book a professional instead?

Stop riding and book a workshop if you hear motor noises, lose power mid-ride, keep seeing the same error code, feel soft brakes or spot frame damage. If a battery looks swollen, feels very hot or smells odd, stop using it and don't charge it. None of these are jobs for home.

We have a workshop located in Woking, Surrey and no appointment is required. If you are located somewhere else in the United Kingdom we offer a courier collection and delivery service, though additional charges apply. We also work with Cycle Tech UK service partners, so a partner near you may be able to help.
